For William, this wasn't simply another shed project. It was an opportunity to create something that reflected a lifetime of memories, celebrated his family's history, and would become a place for future generations to enjoy. Every decision was made with purpose, resulting in a building that is as meaningful as it is practical.
The striking COLORSTEEL® Pioneer Red exterior is the heart of that story. The colour pays tribute to William's late father and the iconic red furniture store his family once owned in Dunedin. It also marks a significant chapter in William's own career, having been involved in one of NZ Steel's earliest major projects at the Glenbrook coil coating plant, where the very first Pioneer Red steel coil was produced. Decades later, seeing that same colour on his own shed represents a remarkable full-circle moment.
Inside, the building has been carefully designed to protect his items while creating a welcoming space for family to spend time together. A restored pedal car that William once rode as a child now waits for his grandchildren, while a feature window frames the surrounding Central Otago rock face like a piece of artwork. Combined with warm timber finishes and modern insulation, the shed is both functional and deeply personal.
Throughout the project, William appreciated working alongside the Wide Span Sheds team to bring his vision to life. Following the shed being named a finalist in the 2024 COLORSTEEL® Awards, the team presented him with a professionally framed photograph of the building. The gift now forms the latest addition to his collection of treasured red barn photographs and carries just as much sentimental value as the shed itself. He was equally honoured to see his project proudly displayed as one of the feature buildings in the Wide Span Sheds new Cromwell office.
Reflecting on the completed project, William described the shed as "a testament to what you guys can achieve." Those words mean a great deal to the team, not only because of the craftsmanship recognised through the COLORSTEEL® Awards, but because they reflect the relationship built throughout the project.
That relationship continues today. So pleased with the entire experience, William has already engaged Wide Span Sheds to help bring his next vision to life; a peaceful retreat where he can take in the spectacular Central Otago landscape and enjoy a good book at the end of the day. Like every project before it, this one has been carefully considered to create another meaningful space for family and friends to enjoy.
