International Women's Day: Wide Span Sheds NZ's Newest Franchise Owner

Congratulations on becoming a franchise owner with Wide Span Sheds! What initially drew you to the construction industry, which is often seen as a male-dominated field?

The construction industry certainly has its challenges, but the rewards far outweigh the challenges.

While traditionally seen as male-dominated, it's a dynamic field undergoing a positive shift towards inclusivity. I consider myself a go-getter, a breaker of norms, and someone who is not afraid to push the boundaries. At Wide Span Sheds, I found a company actively promoting diversity and offering a supportive environment where I could push my boundaries and succeed.

Can you describe your journey to becoming a franchise owner? Were there any challenges you faced specifically as a woman, and how did you overcome them

Joining Wide Span Sheds Waikato as a sales consultant three and a half years ago was a turning point. The company's commitment to me with exceptional mentorship and training opportunities nurtured an environment that allowed me to gain valuable industry experience. Ultimately, Wide Span Sheds empowered me to take the next step and become a franchise owner.

What do you find most rewarding about working in construction?

The most rewarding part about the construction industry is the fast-paced environment, where not two days are the same. Working alongside some amazing individuals who collectively work together to achieve all the demands that the construction industry can throw. I love the relationship that we build with all of our customers, it is a neat journey from the first site visit to the final code of compliance. The last visit is almost bittersweet!

In your experience, what are the unique strengths women bring to the construction industry?

Women excel in communication, attention to detail, problem-solving, and multitasking – all crucial skills in the construction industry. We're seeing a growing number of women entering the field and I am proud to be a part of this movement.

What advice would you give to other women considering a career in construction?

If you're looking for a dynamic career with growth opportunities, explore the construction industry, and do not be afraid to change. You have that power; you can achieve anything that you put your mind to. That is exactly what I did.

Looking ahead, what are your goals for your Wide Span Sheds franchise?

To be the best that we can be! We would love to be Waikato’s first choice for steel solution buildings, with hard work and dedication I believe we will achieve this and beyond.

Beyond your role as a franchise owner, how do you stay involved in your community?

I currently volunteer with IHC in the friendship programme. I love to give back. Previously I volunteered at my local community hub here in Hamilton dropping off food parcels to our most vulnerable. I feel that it is important that we all get involved in our local communities and do our bit, every little bit helps.

As we celebrate International Women's Day, is there anything else you'd like to share about the importance of women in construction?

Absolutely! The construction industry offers many opportunities for women seeking a dynamic, well-paying career. It's a field that values diverse perspectives and as a mother, I also found it offers greater flexibility than many might think.
